What software can do for your fleet
Jason Francis, managing director of fleet software specialist Jaama, believes that the traditional boundaries between fleet, vehicle and driver management and other corporate departments, such as HR and payroll, will become increasingly blurred as mobile communication continues to improve, costs reduce and online computer systems are evermore integrated.
"Mobile workers are becoming increasingly 'connected' to the office through mobile communications", says Jason, "This will permeate across all sectors of business and industry. The information available will then allow all businesses, however small and in whatever market segments, to record data online.
"Drivers will not be able to switch on their vehicles without 'plugging' in technology that directs them to their first job, for example. Data being downloaded will mean that hours worked, mileage clocked up and expense claims as well as other information are all instantly recorded as data is transmitted from the vehicle to the office.
"That integration will extend to drivers being able to order and 'spec' their next new vehicle remotely. Equally, as more and more vehicles are equipped with sophisticated engine management systems, drivers will be automatically reminded of when a service is due or a technical fault in the vehicle is detected."
"While the more expensive cars are equipped with highly sophisticated engine management systems that provide a raft of information to drivers, such technology has yet to filter down to light commercial vehicles," he explained.
"Nevertheless, it will and within the next five to 10 years I predict that the need for human intervention in the management of both vehicles and drivers will be virtually non-existent from a fleet perspective."
"What will be required will be for today's fleet managers to become strategic in their approach and effectively become online data analysts managing both vehicles and drivers by exception reporting as technology flags up problems to be resolved."
