Company culture
One of the most difficult things to change within a business is its culture, especially when linked to Health and Safety.
If a company successfully implements a risk reduction policy concerning its fleet this will permeate throughout the business. For such a policy to be successful there has to be complete support from the top management down. If a strategy is led from the top it is more likely to get buy in from all levels throughout the business and be effective.
Within too many companies, Health and Safety is dealt with at a superficial level and in these companies, the minimum is done to ensure compliancy with the law. It is now widely recognised that safety for fleet operators is an issue which cannot be ignored.
During the last 8 years the Government has introduced a broad range of measures and amendments to reduce fatalities on our roads including:
• The Provision of Work Equipment Regulations
• Changes to ‘The Management of Health and Safety at Work' Regulations
• The ‘Transport Act 2000’
• Establishing the ‘Work-Related Road Safety Task Group' (WRRSTG)
• The HSE’s 'Driving at Work' safety guidelines 2003
Alexandra Pittortou, Jaama’s Road Safety Director says on the subject: “With new legislation on the horizon like the long overdue amendment to the law on corporate manslaughter, our Government will continue to press ahead with road safety and holding organisations to account.”
If your company manages to implement a comprehensive occupational road risk reduction strategy it should encourage a change in attitude throughout the business in relation to Health and Safety. This change in company culture can only lead to a safer business as a whole with regard to reducing risks throughout the business.
