Marie Jarrold set to save BCA £700,000 on fleet costs - Fleet News - 4th June 2009
Two decisions taken by BCA fleet manager Marie Jarrold within the past seven months could end up saving the company more than £700,000.
The first, a move to longer replaceement cycles, echoes a popular trend among fleets which lease their vehicles. For BCA, which outright purchases its vehicle fleet, the action brings an immediate benefit to the bottom line.
BCAs policy changed in October from four years/80,000 miles to four and-a-half years/90,000 miles. The company, which spends £1.2 million a year replacing 100-120 vehicles, estiimates a one-off saving of £641,000 by deferring financial outlay.
There is a cost to extending replaceement cycles: maintenance bills will rise and the re-sale value will fall slightly. However, BCA estimates the impact to be minimal - £200-300 per vehicle on higher service costs.
Jaama adds safety tickbox function for LCV fleets - Fleet Van May 2009
Software company Jaama has introduced a commercial vehicle defect logging reporting tool to its Key2 Vehicle Management software system.
The technology provides transport and depot managers with an online tick box check list so they can complete a walkkround appraisal of all vehicles as frequently as they wish.
While many commercial vehicle operators are likely to record 'nil' defects, any work that is required can be recorded and then arrangements made for the vehicle to be booked into a workshop.
The technology has been developed in conjunction with a number of customers including international courier and logistics company DHL and SIG, which
is a long-time client and a partner in developing and testing new systems.

New defect logging tool - Fleet News 23rd April 2009
Fleet software provider ]aama has introduced a commercial vehicle defect logging reporting tool to its Key2 Vehicle Management software system.
The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency recommmends that commercial vehhicle operators have a defect reporting system in place.
The technology provides managers with an online tick box check list so they can complete a walk-round appraisal of vehicles.
The technology was develloped in conjunction with a number of customers, including DHL.
"Defect Manager covers every part of a vehicle to ensure that managers have the very latest information on the condition of every vehicle on their fleet," said ]aama managing director ]ason Francis.
"Where defects are recorded a maintenance record will be created and reminders will be issued until the work is completed."
A fleet manager's responsibility? Fleet News 16th April 2009
But is it ultimately down to the fleet operaator to manage the grey fleet risk? Walsh says not. 'The grey fleet issue is fundaamentally about managing staff and it's the line manager's responsibility to manage behaviour. The fleet manager's responsiibility is the vehicles."
Jason Francis, Jaama managing direcctor, adds: "Many companies have moved away from traditional company cars believving they have eliminated a health and safety headache. They haven't.
"Companies are responsible for employees who drive their own cars on business from a health and safety perspective as well as the vehicles driven.
"It is imperative that the same monitorring process is put in place for these people and their vehicles as for company-owned vehicles and their drivers."
'Can do' attitude Fleet News - 9th April 2009
Jason Frands is something of a reluctant business entrepreneur. The founder of fleet management systems provider ]aama spent almost 10 years at Pendragon-owned CFC, the last five as managing director.
CFC was a highly-profitable business for Pendragon but was seen by the UK's biggest car franchised retailer as a non-core operation. Investment was diverted elsewhere and Francis foresaw his part of the organisation slipping behind its competitors.

Job loss is no longer a licence saver
COMPANY car drivers who try to avoid a driving ban by claiming it will cost them their jobs will have a less sympathetic ear in future following new guidelines issued by the Magistrates Association.
Previously, a driver could cite an 'exceptional hardship' clause, hoping magistrates would issue a heavy fine radier than a ban.
But the new guidance says losing a job does not automatically qualify for 'exceptional hardship'.
Furuier evidence of the increasingly hardline approach comes from the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), which is putting together teams of lawyers and former police officers to help prosecute speeding cases and prevent drivers using loopholes to get them off.
But the crackdown on persistent offenders should prompt fleets to introduce proper licence checks.
