Largest ever fleet safety survey by Jaama reveals drivers still at risk Fleet Software and Occupational Road Safety experts Jaama has completed one of the largest ever road safety surveys which reveals companies are still putting drivers at risk as they ignore their duty of care responsibilities.
Over 1300 companies with fleet sizes more than 5 vehicles responded to the survey including fleet managers, managing directors, finance directors and human resource managers, with worrying results. The survey covered a broad spectrum of organisations in both the private and public sector, including sole traders, partnerships, government, local authorities, schools and colleges.
Of the responses, 22% admit to being completely unaware of the HSE’s driving at work guidelines. More worrying are the 78% who claimed to be fully or partially aware, but still appear to be falling short of even the most simple checks. Surprisingly, 42% had no road safety policy, a basic requirement from the HSE.
The overall results were as bad with 53% not having a nominated individual responsible for road safety, 15% not checking drivers’ licenses or enforcing eye sight tests, 78% not monitoring drivers’ hours, 63% not checking for DVLA notifiable medical conditions and 50% admitting they are not able to identify ‘at risk’ drivers.
Of the 68% who let employees use their own cars for business, 74% didn’t know whether these vehicles required an MOT, 22% didn’t checked their drivers were insurance for business use, 78% didn’t check V5 documents and 85% admitted that they never inspected any aspect of the vehicle condition.
Managing Director of Jaama, Jason Francis said: “When conducting our research we deliberately set out to gain an accurate picture across a broad range of UK companies, not just those who are clued up enough to read fleet publications.
“Whilst there has been a significant amount of road safety publicity within our industry press, our research shows there’s is huge lack of awareness amongst smaller fleets, and this is where road safety policies are less likely to be in place.
“What is startling is the scale of the absence of even the most basic checks from this group when they allow employees to use there own vehicles. Schools, colleges and small businesses are by far the worst offenders.
“The results could mean that there are up to 1 million vehicles on our roads used for business that are not properly managed.”
Over the last 6 months, Jaama has trained over 200 companies in occupational road safety best practice. Training seminars show companies how to reduce costs and meet their duty of care responsibilities through implementing safety policies.
