JAAMA PUTS COMMERCIAL VEHICLE OPERATORS ON THE ROAD TO DIGITAL TACHOGRAPH DOWNLOADING WITH HI-TECH SYSTEMS
Industry-leading commercial vehicle fleet management software developed by Jaama has liberated fleet operators from the administratively cumbersome task of manually recording and checking drivers’ hours.
With digital tachographs replacing outdated analogue tachographs on almost all newly registered commercial vehicles of more than 3.5 tonne gross vehicle weight, coaches and buses, the efficient downloading of data for fleet operators to carry out legally required checks on drivers’ hours and rostering and to maintain records in accordance with Operator Licence regulations is essential.
Jaama has spent £1 million in the development of its Key2 Vehicle Management system, which covers all aspects of owning, leasing, hiring, maintaining, repairing and disposing of vehicles, plant and other asset-related equipment
Jaama managing director Jason Francis said: “Historically technology available to commercial vehicle operators to both manage regulatory requirements and reduce operating costs has lagged a long way behind other software applications. However, systems have now caught up and Key2 Vehicle Management represents the future in the same way as digital tachographs do.”
There has been widespread concern among many fleet operators as to how digital tachograph data will be downloaded and then disseminated company-wide to a number of departments, including fleet/transport, HR and finance and the costs involved of complying with the legislation.
Those fears were underlined as companies rushed to beat the May 1 digital tachograph introduction deadline. Truck registrations in April were 110% up on 12 months earlier and that distortion was echoed in May with registrations 36% down year-on-year. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders expects sales figures to continue to remain low this month (June).
Mr Francis said: “As with any major change the anxiety of commercial vehicle operators over the introduction of digital tachographs is understandable. That concern has clearly manifested itself in recent sales figures.
“Although, the digital technology has been 15 years in the planning, the European Union only confirmed its introduction 13 working days before it became law. It is a natural reaction, therefore, for companies to avoid using digital tachographs for as long as possible while they get to grips with what the change means for their business.
“But, perceptions of increased complexity, higher costs and how the data captured by the digital tachographs can be downloaded, analysed and acted upon are misguided.”
Although printouts can still be obtained directly from digital tachographs such an out-dated routine does not allow for detailed analysis of driver and vehicle activity to be undertaken effectively and it means record keeping is inefficient.
Instead commercial vehicle operators should download all digital tachograph information to carry out analysis.
Mr Francis said: “Far from being viewed as an enemy, digital tachographs should be embraced by operators as they will revolutionise the burden of record keeping providing companies also invest in software technology to enable the efficient downloading and checking of data.”
Key2 Vehicle Management software has the capability to interface with systems used by companies in different departments, such as HR, and in depots and to exchange information with each other and through external links thus providing minimum input and maximum accuracy. The ability to grow the data is then limitless and seamless.
“The advantages of digital tachographs used in tandem with a modern, hi-tech web-based system will fast outweigh the administrative burden of analogue tachographs once transport operators get to grips with the technology,” said Mr Francis.
“Jaama’s Key2 Vehicle Management system is a fleet management hub which automatically and seamlessly links suppliers, customers, drivers and technology providers together and enables the downloading and dissemination of digital tachograph data without personnel intervention to a single database for multiple use.”
