JAAMA UPDATES KEY2 FLEET MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE TO MEET COMMERCIAL VEHICLE DRIVER CPC COMPLIANCE
Fleet management software specialist Jaama has introduced additional functionality to its online Key2 Fleet Management system to ensure corporate and driver compliance with the new commercial vehicle Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence), which comes into effect on Thursday (September 10).
As well as being made to meet legislative demands, the update has taken place due to customer requests for Jaama’s help in managing the administrative processes associated with the qualification.
The Driver CPC, which was introduced for bus and coach drivers 12 months ago, is aimed at raising and maintaining the standards of drivers of commercial vehicles weighing 3.5 tonnes or more as well as bus and coach drivers throughout the UK.
It has been developed as a requirement of the EU Directive 2003/59, which is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of professional LGV and PCV drivers throughout their working life. There are two parts to the legislation:
- The Initial Qualification that must be achieved by new LGV and PCV drivers along with their vocational licence to enable them to use their licence professionally.
- Periodic Training, which involves all professional drivers undertaking 35 hours of training every five years.
Key2 not only captures the Driver CPC information, but intelligently manages the vehicles that the driver is permitted to drive and which training modules and events are due.
To obtain a Driver Qualification Card the driver is required to pass four modules, and Key2 captures the status of the driver with regard to passing each of the modules.
Employees who hold a full licence to drive a lorry prior to September 10 will not be required to take the initial Driver CPC qualification examinations. However, they will need to complete 35 hours of periodic training by 2014 and every five years thereafter if they wish to continue driving professionally.
Jaama managing director Jason Francis said: “In the run-up to the introduction of Driver CPC our customers told us that without systemised controls the administrative burden of managing the process of ensuring that drivers were up to date with their CPC qualification and remained legal to drive would be a logistical nightmare.
“As a result we have added new functionality to Key2 that automatically highlights to line managers the status of individual driver’s CPC with advanced notification of any training requirements to ensure maximum compliance and renewal of the Driver Qualification Card.”
Chief executive of the Driving Standards Agency, Rosemary Thew, said ahead of the launch of the commercial vehicle driver CPC: “Lorry driving is a profession with a high level of responsibility. We are confident that the new qualification will help to reduce the human and financial costs of road accidents in the UK.”
Mr Francis added: “No-one would dispute the importance of road safety. However, it is equally important that all companies and their drivers who are exposed to the new legislation are given maximum assistance in ensuring compliance with a minimal increase in administration. The updates we have made to Key2 ensure that happens.”
