Forthcoming anti-ageism legislation to impact fleets
NEW LEGISLATION TO ban ageism in the UK could have a profound impact on companies, particularly where new recruits are expected to drive, says Jaama.
The occupational road safety and fleet software expert is warning companies that they must ensure they have robust occupational driving health and safety policies in place ahead of the legislation's introduction from 1 October 2006.
Jaama MD Jason Francis said: "Best practice advice suggests that companies should always, irrespective of age, check employee driving licences, accident history, their eyesight and medical background prior to employment and regularly thereafter. "However, research by ourselves and many others consistently highlights a failure to act in these vital areas."
He continued: "Some companies use a range of excuses not to employ people, including their age. The new legislation is aimed at improving job opportunities for older people and, therefore, during the recruitment process it is vital to check the health and driving history of these people. However, so as to avoid accusations of discrimination it is essential that all procedures apply to everyone, both at the recruitment stage and in employment.
"In the area of driving it is particularly important that comprehensive audits of drivers are conducted and updated regularly so -businesses can protect themselves against any potential allegations."
Francis concluded: "Companies should ensure that contracts of employment put the onus on staff to advise of any changes in their fitness levels and whether they are taking any medication that could impact on their ability to drive." Back to fleet software press cuttings
